dwell
in the winter i get quiet.
at home, this room, with winter dusk, white shadows, candle glow, steam, still water, epsom salt, shea butter and lavender, breathe in, clean hair.
lately i like to rinse my hair with honey.
we've been lighting beeswax candles almost every night.
more and more this hemp blanket has become my favourite.
i'm reading icelander right now. i like it.... (i wasn't sure i would.)
i am fascinated by these pieces by melanie bilenker. from materials of gold, resin, ivory piano key laminate, watch crystal, and pigment she crafts these delicately luminous scenes of quiet moments, rendered with thoughtful lines - of her own hair. i still find this both compelling and discomfiting, but beautiful nevertheless. in the tradition of victorian mourning jewelry, these are small hierlooms of spun memory to collect the everyday.
i also love her chatelaine for collecting, recording, and remembering. those useful objects, and how their beauty lies in their use - this is as much a marvel as the beauty we wish to capture: pencil, viewfinder, vial and ivory tags . . .
and the look through the viewfinder:

Her jewellery pieces are amazing, must have to concentrate so hard to use a length of hair to illustrate with. I am intrigued by your use of honey to rinse hair...

another beautiful post! I kept checking to see when you'd update since I only discovered this lovely quiet, serene space at the tea party. I know, I could get bloglines but the surprise element is so nice! I'd like to know more about the honey rinse too...

thanks all :) aren't her pieces amazing? i would love to wear one of her rings...
the honey rinse is simple - i just use honey! it rinses out easily, and it makes your hair soft and shining but not wispy. it helps if you have a squeeze lid, though ;)

Those pieces are beautiful...
And your post has me longing for a bath (something which in the middle of a drought, is a luxury we can't afford). I want to rinse my hair in honey. I crave all of these winter delights. Enjoy!

i like your celebration of quiet. quiet is so important to me. it has become an endangered species for some of us. the illustration in the bath is so beautiful.. i can smell the beeswax.
